Assessing the knowledge, skills, and judgment of trainees in virtual environments is an inexact and expensive process. The Virtual Soldier Skills Assessor (ViSSA) was developed to provide repeatable, Standards-based, and inexpensive warfighter and peace keeper assessment for the US Government.
ViSSA assesses trainees immersed in a DIS-based virtual environment (or in HLA or TENA systems via a DIS gateway). The system automatically compares trainee actions with predefined standards. The comparisons are based on a wide variety of variables, including movement, orientation, posture, weapons use, and communications. ViSSA can provide real-time assessment of the following skills:
•Tactical Skill
•Performance
•Decision-making
•Situational Awareness
As an example, ViSSA can assess a warfighter for proper use of cover and concealment during urban operations. It can do this by monitoring how often and how long the warfighter moves into open areas, whether they pause to look down side streets, and whether they quickly seek cover if they hear shots fired.
This tactical assessment can also become a decision-making assessment by observing the warfighter's response to a group of armed individuals emerging from a side street.
During a virtual exercise, ViSSA assesses the trainee in real time. The system automatically detects and bookmarks Significant Events but also allows the observer/controller to manually enter Significant Events. As soon as the virtual exercise ends, the system orchestrates an after-action review (AAR) that focuses on the automated and manual Significant Event bookmarks.
The system works with all DIS-compliant simulation systems including the VBS2, Soldier Visualization Station (SVS), OneSAF/OTB/OOS, and DISAF. The system can work in an HLA federation (ex. JSIMS, WARSIM, and JSAF), a TENA site (ex. JNTC), or a CTIA exercise using an appropriate DIS Gateway. ViSSA is capable of logging DIS-based audio communications (ex. ASTi) and assessing warfighter communications. Using these DIS-based audio communications, ViSSA can provide real-time audible feedback to trainees (automated tutoring).
ViSSA was developed under Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) funding from the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) through the US Army Research Institute. The ViSSA development effort won the 2004 Army Quality Award.
