Danville Office Equipment (DOE) was founded in 1951 by Jesse C. Shearer, a native of Lexington. Mr. Shearer and his wife, Zina, operated the store at its first location on Fourth Street in Danville.

Because of the Shearers' commitment to quality products and customer service, their business soon outgrew their original location, and by 1963 they had to relocate to a larger building on Fourth Street. In 1966 the Shearer's were joined by a partner, J. Carlton Brown. The business continued to grow and prosper, becoming the largest office supply store in the Danville area.

By 1975, DOE again faced the need for more space, and the store moved to its present location at 233 West Main Street in Danville.

In 1982, Ted Baker purchased Mr. Shearer's interest in the business and in 1984 he purchased Mr. Brown's interest, becoming the sole owner of DOE.

* In 1981 DOE purchased an office supply business in Lebanon, which became DOE Lebanon.
* In 1998 DOE purchased the Casey Print Shop in Liberty, which became DOE Liberty.
* In 2000 DOE opened a brand new store in Somerset, DOE Somerset.

Technology has dramatically changed the business at DOE since its founding in 1951. During the early years, calculators, typewriters and a wide variety of paper products were the business staples. During the mid-1960's, the company began to sell and service copy machines and related products.
