Twenty-five years ago on June 1, 1988, Gift of Life began its mission of providing access to maternity care and education to low-income women in Autauga, Elmore, Lowndes, and Montgomery counties. One of our first deliveries was Joyce May at St. Margaret's Hospital. Her baby girl was delivered by Vicki Brooks, CNM. Over 25 years, our maternity program has expanded to include 20 counties, and Gift of Life consists of other programs in addition to the maternity program collectively working towards the mission of "Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies".
In 1988, in the face of an alarming infant mortality rate, Central Alabama's community leaders, healthcare professionals, and concerned citizens formed a public and private sector partnership called Gift of Life.
The Gift of Life Foundation has lived up to its name by providing an efficient and caring system of perinatal services, education, tracking, and care coordination for pregnant women and their babies--regardless of their ability to pay.
Services include: prenatal care, delivery, postpartum care, nutrition counseling, child health services, maternal health education, and school abstinence education.
