History of Greene County Habitat for Humanity
Founded in 1985, Greene County Habitat for Humanity (GCHFH) has over the course of 21 years: oBuilt 23 new houses
oRehabilitated 23 houses for new homeowners
oHoused 46 families totaling 158 individuals, including 86 children, 15 single mother households, and 7 elderly homeowners
In the past five years, we have become much more efficient as an organization, increasing our production to: 15 new homes and 2 rehabilitated homes.
During this same time period, we have assisted regional Habitat affiliates on 26 separate projects with material packages from our warehouse.
GCHFH relies on volunteers to build its homes. Each year we host 12-15 volunteer work camps from outside the region. These groups consist of college students from outside the state, who participate in their campuses' alternative spring break programs, and numerous youth and adult groups from churches throughout the country join us in the summer to build homes as they focus on mission work. Weekly, during the school year, students from Waynesburg College assist us with our construction projects.
Our affiliate has a long-standing tradition of working closely with local churches and Waynesburg College for volunteer opportunities. Additionally, GCHFH recently partnered with (ACI) Affordable Comfort, Inc. a 501(c) (3) non-profit that promotes energy efficient home building technologies. This project (made possible by a grant from the PA Department of Environmental Protection) focused on the design phase of our homes. We subsequently built the first ENERGY STAR(R) rated home in Southwestern PA. The energy efficient standards used in that house are now included in our house packages. The promotion and use of energy efficient home plans within the Habitat program of homebuilding, means that those who are least able to cope with high energy costs are now able to afford to keep their families warm without "busting their budget." On a larger view, the systematic replacement of outdated inefficient dwellings with energy efficient structures translates into considerable energy conservation and less air pollution for the community.
