Our purpose is simple. We exist to tell true stories. This may sound quaint and almost precious in a post post-modern world. But we believe it in our bones. And it is actually quite rebellious in an industry that has a history littered with bombast, over-promise and a cynical lack of respect for its audience.
We call our approach Creative Nonfiction. All this means is that we do the hard work of discovering a brand's most compelling, most profound truth and we tell that story in an organic, engaging, human way.
It means getting intimate with the brand and allowing its DNA to come through in work that is surprising, delightful, impactful, provocative, relentlessly creative and... true. It means getting out of the way of what is real and not bolting on a fabricated ad construct or borrowed interest to deflect or refract the simple fact of the matter.
The result is that the work we do tends to be more positive and less cynical. More hopeful and less mean-spirited. More authentic, less "addy," and we believe, sort of refreshing and modern. We don't do self-reflexive indulgent work. There are plenty of agencies that do that. We do work that works. Form follows function. Style trumps trend.
This also means that our work takes on different forms. People ask, are you a digital shop? And we say yes. They ask, are you a traditional shop? And we say yes. Because when you're committed to telling the truth in a compelling way, the way you tell it comes organically from the story itself. No rules. No barriers.
So we tell our stories with iFrames and Applications, web videos and widgets, social networks, TV spots, microsites and stories that live on the sides of buildings and on end-aisle displays in-store.
Even more fun is the way we mash up our storytelling tools online and offline so that chapters may unfold from a 140-character Tweet feed, to a conversation in a social network, to an act of kindness in a real-life brick and mortar retail store. Same story. Different scenes, sets and locations.
Why do we believe so wholeheartedly in Creative Nonfiction? Two simple reasons. One - technology has created an atmosphere of transparency and consumer awareness that is unprecedented in human history. Brands that try to rely on smoke and mirrors will get found out faster and more publicly than ever before. And they will ultimately fail. Consumers have always deserved respect; technology now allows them to demand it. And we couldn't be happier. Two - this is what we want to do for a living. This is what we feel good about on career day at our kids' schools. Telling true stories in a relentlessly creative way is inspiring, exhausting, consuming and rewarding. All the things a shallow, hollow ad campaign is not.
