Sterling Institutional Review Board is registered with DHHS; our IRB registration number is IRB00001790, parent organization number IORG0001354 (Expiration date October 21, 2016)
The Sterling Institutional Review Board ("Sterling IRB" or "Sterling") was established in 1991 as an independent review board to provide protection for human research participants through the initial and ongoing review of research studies. As an independent review board, Sterling IRB is not affiliated with an academic institution or a research hospital.
The Board is comprised of highly qualified individuals representing a variety of scientific and non-scientific disciplines. Each member has experience with all facets of the approval process and a deep concern for participant welfare and safety. Please review the Board Roster for more information on their professional backgrounds.
The decisions of the Board are guided by the ethical principles set forth in the Belmont Report. The Board reviews clinical research protocols, participant informed consent documents, and investigator credentials to ensure compliance with federal regulations. It also ensures that research subjects are appropriately informed about the risks and benefits of participating in a research study. Upon receiving initial approval from the Board, investigators and sites are monitored through the continuing review process of all study-related materials including, but not limited to, the review of ongoing reports, monitoring letters, safety information documents, protocol amendments, consent document revisions and recruitment/retention materials.
Sterling IRB reviews multi-center research studies as well as those involving a single investigator. Its client base consists of pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, clinical research organizations (CROs), federal agencies and individual investigators. Sterling IRB may also act as the review board for studies conducted at hospitals or academic institutions (see Institutions for more information), and is approved by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to review studies for investigators who are conducting clinical research in the state of Massachusetts. The Sterling IRB administrative staff is committed to exceptional, individual customer service.
